Super Blue Smoothie

July 25, 2014

A few weeks ago, I bought a juice from Vive Juicery (based in Salt Lake City) that had spirulina in it, and a little bit after that Nutrition Stripped (my favorite nutrition blogger) did a post on spirulina milk. I was so intrigued that I quickly went out and bought some spirulina and decided to experiment with it. For anyone who knows what spirulina is, they will know that it is not inexpensive. Luckily one of the Whole Foods at Salt Lake City had it in their bulk food section so that helped me save quite a lot of money as I didn’t need a whole tubful! And voila; this is how I came to create my super blue smoothie!

Super Blue Smoothie

For all of you that DON’T know what spirulina is, no doubt you are wondering what it is and why I am experimenting with it!. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is grown and harvested from alkaline water . It has a slightly nutty taste and has been said to have a variety of health benefits. These include protecting the liver, anti-inflammatory properties, and has even been said to help increase fat burning during exercise. Spirulina also has a ton of protein (57g of protein per 100g!), contains chlorophyll, iron and a ton of vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids.

Super Blue Smoothie

Hopefully that has convinced you to at least give it a try! A lot of people call spirulina a ‘superfood’ but I am not particularly fond of that name because it suggests that it is an almost perfect food which will magically make you healthier .. which is of course not the case. There is no one perfect food, and we should try and include as many nutrient dense foods as possible in our diet to become healthier.

Super Blue Smoothie

Which is why I wanted to throw spirulina into a smoothie! I really wanted to make a ‘blue’ smoothie that would of course include blueberries (high in nutrients and low in calories) and other tasty fruits. Although it turned out more blue-green than blue, it is tasty and filled with lots of fruit. It is very refreshing and a little milky so feel free to sweeten it up with honey, maple syrup, stevia or whatever other sweetener you desire.

Slow Cooker Oatmeal

May 16, 2014

Okay so I just want to start off by apologizing in advance as the photo’s are not the prettiest But seriously, how pretty can oatmeal really be? Hehe, I tried my best but just be assured that this slow cooker oatmeal TASTES amazing!

So what is this week’s edition of Friday Fare? … Slow cooker oatmeal!

Slow Cooker Oatmeal

Slow Cooker Oatmeal

My boyfriend bought me a slow cooker a few weeks back and I am literally obsessed with it. It has made meal prep and meals in general so much easier. I mean seriously, all you do is add your ingredients (plus chopping stuff if you need too, which can take a while actually as slow Alice found out) into the slow cooker, set it to low or high, and then leave it for several hours. And voila! Delicious food in mass quantities, mmmmm.

Slow Cooker Oatmeal

Told you the photo’s wouldn’t be fantastic 🙁 SO delicious though

I discovered the idea of slow cooker oatmeal while just searching the web trying to look for alternatives to overnight oats. I really like overnight oats but it’s cold .. and I really like a warm and comforting breakfast. Slow cooker oatmeal presented a lovely way to have a warm and delicious breakfast with minimal effort involved! I like my oatmeal really creamy and rich so I used unsweetened almond and coconut milk as my liquid, but feel free to substitute half for water if you want a less rich oatmeal.

This meal is full of protein and complex carbohydrates and is extremely filling and should keep you feeling full for a good three to four hours.

Sunday Summary

Sunday Summary: Kayla Itsines Week 10

May 4, 2014
Kayla Itsines Week 10 BBG

Early happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of a victory in 1862 in the fight for independence from French forces which is celebrated by both the US and Mexico. I went to my first ever cinco de mayo party the other night and it was extremely fun. And yes, I did have some sangria and a margarita (or two) which is unusual for me since I normally do not drink. I view alcohol as a source of empty calories and as not benefiting your body in anyway whatsoever, but I will have a drink on a special occasion.

Kayla Itsines Week 10

I have now finished week 10 of Kayla Itsine’s bikini body guide (hands down the hardest arm and abs workouts of the entire program) and cannot believe I only have two weeks left!!! I found the gazillion snap jumps and the spider push ups so incredibly hard .. thought my arms were gonna fall off. Although my transformation so far has not been crazy and incredibly dramatic, the progress photo’s I have been taking show that my stomach is more toned and that my legs are getting smaller. I am so proud of the changes (small or not) that have happened so far plus I can do much much more push ups than I was ever able too, which is an achievement in itself. Since I had quite a lot of sugary foods and drinks this weekend, I really need to be strict for the next two weeks in order to reap the full benefits of Kayla Itsine’s workouts. I normally do eat a very healthy diet but I am just going to be stricter with counting my macro’s and calories for the next few weeks. Counting macro’s and calories may not work for some but it definitely works for me.

Dying after week 10’s leg workout

In addition to my kick ass (literally) workouts, I was kindly invited by Project Juice to visit their Russian Hill location in San Francisco to sample some of their juices and to check the shop out in general. They gave me a few juices to take home and try and I will be doing a post on Project Juice and their delicious and very healthy juices this tuesday, so look out for that! Project Juice has fantastic values and I was truly impressed by what they had to offer .. which is quite rare in the health and fitness industry. If you follow my Facebook page and my Instagram, no doubt you will have seen what juices I have tried so far.
