TRX Training Center Review

September 18, 2014

Thanks to my wonderful one month ClassPass membership (read more about ClassPass here), I had the opportunity to try out two TRX classes at the TRX Training Center. I decided to write a TRX training center review for any of you who may interested in taking a class there. I use TRX exercises occasionally in my workouts but I had always wanted the experience of doing a class. Even though I can work up quite a sweat on my own, there is something about having someone push you to your limits and telling you to do “JUST ONE MORE!”

The first class I tried was the ‘TRX Circuit Training’ class. I completed Kayla Itsines bikini body guide (BBG) a few months ago (read my review here) and since her workouts are circuit based, I thought this would be a really fun class to try.

Ah, if only I were as fit as I was when I was doing Kayla’s program … I really got my butt kicked at the TRX circuit training class!

The class is a mixture of strength moves done on the TRX and cardio based moves such as jump rope and burpees. The class was essentially structured so you would do a few sets of exercises on the TRX (which were timed) and you would then take a short break and do some cardio based moves without the TRX (also timed). Every part of your body gets worked out in this class; upper body, core and legs. My core is definitely my weak point and the TRX really challenges you because you use the whole weight of your body to support you. The instructor for the class was Miguel, and he was fantastic! I feel as if most instructors do not check on their students form much, but he was great at making sure my form was on point. I would love to take another TRX circuit training class with him (although a little scared haha).

Me dying in the TRX circuit training class

The second class I tried was the TRX Body Blast class. Although this class was just as hard (I had to pause and catch my breath multiple times), it was more of a strength based class. You do get cardio in as you are moving at a fast pace but you are not doing dedicated cardio based moves as you would in the TRX circuit training class. Again, this class worked every inch of my body and left me feeling extremely sore. This class was much fuller than the TRX circuit training class and I have to say, I felt a little intimidated at first! I had nothing to worry about though as everyone was really nice and welcoming.

“Bottom line: TRX is an incredibly

effective and challenging workout”

I feel so lucky to live in a city with a TRX training center! I hope to try out some more classes in the future. I was particularly interested in trying out their TRX rip training to see what that was all about. It will have to wait however because next week, I plan on restarting Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide and then continuing onto the bikini body guide 2.0 … I am SO nervous. I did the legs workout from her free week of workouts downloads and today my legs are so incredibly sore and stiff. I forgot how intense the workouts were!

So wish me luck 🙂 Also, how many of you have ever tried a TRX class before? Let me know if you have or if you use it at your local gym. Would love to see some of the routines you guys do with TRX.

Honestly yours,
Alice

The Best Fitness Trackers for Your Sport

The Best Fitness Trackers for Your Sport

Getting out and moving your body during the warmer months is seriously beneficial. In addition to clearing your head, relieving stress and enjoying the beautiful weather, physical activity is associated with weight loss and disease prevention, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). But when you pound the pavement or do laps at the local pool, how do you know exactly how much energy you’re exerting? Whether it’s to track calories burned, to train for an event, or just for the heck of it, there are many fitness trackers out there that are tailored to your specific sport.

We’ve rounded up a few of the best fitness trackers for all types of fun summer activities, including swimming (yes, really), running and more.

Walking

There are hundreds of relatively accurate ways to measure your stride. Whether it’s a device such as Jawbone or Fitbit ($100 and $150, respectively), or a free mobile app like Argus, either will give you a sense of how many steps you’re taking per day by calculating your distance in relation to your stride length and other factors. Another idea? There’s a new device by Misfit — the makers of Shine activity and sleep tracker — called the Bloom necklace (which will run you about $80 — $100 Shine not included). It tracks activity, as well as other things, and all you have to do is wear a pretty stainless steel pendant!

Swimming

Pool-goers, rejoice! You no longer need to clutter your mind-space with keeping track of your laps. Instead, pick up a nifty fitness gadget to do it for you. The Speedo Aquacoach watch uses technology developed by UK-based Swimovate to automatically detect the stroke and — along with counting laps — calculate distance, speed, number of individual strokes and calories burned. It’s water-resistant up to 100 meters and can remember up to 50 swim sessions, allowing you to try to beat your previous performance and measure progress. It can be yours for around $125.

 Running

Sure, you can use a walking tracker for running, but with all of the options out there, it’s easy to find one that will better track your pace. MapMyRun is a free web and app-based option. There are also premium devices like the New Balance GPS Runner and the Garmin Forerunner 620. They both come at a price ($100 and $400, respectively), but are perfect if you’re a runner who wants to track your laps, intervals, calories burned, distance, pace and speed. The Garmin has these same bells and whistles, but additionally measures heart rate and VO2 max (maximum oxygen consumption), calculates your recovery time between workouts, and offers tips about your running form after analysis.

Golfing

Whether you’re at the driving range, playing a competitive game of mini golf, or doing a full 18-hole round, keep score of how many strokes you take. Instead of counting in your head, try a dedicated stroke counter. They’re generally no bigger than a quarter, no more than $20 and attach easily to your glove.

Wednesday Wishlist

September 7, 2014

Being permanently strapped for cash can kind of suck, and I am sure anyone who is in university (and especially graduate school) can relate to this.

I am constantly thinking about all the nice things I will one day be able to afford buuuut for now, the closest I can get to reaching them is to dream. Dream, work hard, graduate and get an amazing job once I finish my master’s degree of course 🙂

Wednesday Wishlist

Therefore … welcome to my Wednesday (fitness) wishlist! I thought I would share with you all a fun little graphic with my top 5 fitness wants. I am sure you will agree on me with at least one thing, and if not then tell me fitness item you are currently dreaming about!

fitness wishlist which includes Kayla Itsines BBG and quest protein chips

1. NEW WORKOUT CLOTHES!!! Somehow I never have enough workout bottoms. One of my leggings magically disappeared and the other one has a hole in it ugh … I am loving these leggings from Cassey Ho’s (the Blogilates lady) new activewear line, Bodypop Active.

2. BIKINI BODY GUIDE 2.0 by the fantastically fit, Kayla Itsines. I am thinking of redoing her 1st bikini body guide soon and then purchasing the second one after I complete it. Stay tuned for posts on what I think about it and then a full-scale review once I complete the program 🙂

3. NEW TRAINERS – good lord yes, I have had the same Nike’s for 3 years. And as amazing as they are, they are getting pretty worn out. Would love a pair of these cute mint coloured Nike’s!

4. QUEST PROTEIN CHIPS – haven’t managed to find any yet although I haven’t undertaken an intensive search to find them yet. The macronutrients on these chips sound incredible and I have heard they also TASTE incredible!

5. OLIVE OIL SPRAYER – I used to have something similar to this when I lived in the UK, and I am kicking myself in the butt for not bringing it to the US. I think these are really cool because a lot of sprays you buy at the supermarket have a lot of unnecessary ingredients added so that the oil will actually spray out of the can. This cool Misto olive oil spray works by utilizing pressure. Great way to use less oil when cooking.

If anyone wishes to donate to the Alice Fund, go right ahead … haha just kidding! Anyway, let me know in the comments below what you thought of my choices and what your burning fitness desires are! Products or not 😉

Honestly yours,
Alice xxx
