It’s almost the end of the year and again, I find myself at a loss over where the time went! This year has been a whirlwind for me–2017 has been a good year for me and I’m sad to see the back of it but excited for what 2017 holds. With a new year comes new experiences, new emotions … and new ways to pursue healthy living!
If you’re looking for fun new ways to spice up your routine then read on for my recommendations on 3 new ways to get fit in 2017.
1. Join a Dietbet
Dietbet is a way to have fun while losing weight! It works by putting in $15, $30 or $50 depending on which game you want to join. Once you’ve joined, all you need to do is upload a starting photo, a photo of your scale with your starting weight, as well as your starting weight plus height. If you lose 4% of your bodyweight then you can win some money!

Half of each pot will go to support Volunteers of America and homeless youth, so you can lose weight, and engage in philanthropic efforts for the New Year. A good friend of mine started her own Dietbet game and I encourage you to join by clicking here!
2. Start Lifting Heavy Weights
It’s almost laughable how much I used to fear lifting heavy weights. And you know what’s even funnier? I got in the best shape of my life in 2012 lifting heavy weights yet was still scared to use them after some initial weight-gain a few months later (I was on a really restrictive diet at the time). I cannot believe it took until 2016 for me to actually tentatively step into lifting heavy weights again (thanks to the Progress Pure Curve Guide, to be honest).
Let me tell you all the reasons you should start lifting heavy. Okay granted, if you’re a beginner, maybe just get into a regular strength training routine first and then revisit this. However, if you’ve been exercising regularly, and feel like you’ve plateaued, pleaaaase consider lifting heavy weights.
A) You will lose fat and gain muscle. I promise you will not get bulky. You will only get bulky if you are eating more than you are burning–i.e. if you gain fat on top of muscle then yes, you’ll look bulky.
B) You’ll feel insanely empowered and STRONG! Whenever I would go into the weights room and deadlift, squat or do whatever at a heavy weight, I’d feel strong, capable and empowered to tackle the rest of the day.
3. Buy a Cookbook and Make Every Single Recipe
Preferably a cookbook with healthy recipes 🙂 I think this is a fun way to push yourself out of your comfort zone; to eat and prepare new vegetables, shake up your routine a little. It can be really tempting for us to stick to the same old thing, day in and day out. But answer me this; how are you going to learn which foods your body responds best to if you’re not experimenting?
I’d recommend checking out your local grocery store and seeing which food magazines they have (my favorite is the Better Homes and Gardens special food edition magazines), the Inspiralized book or the Clean and Lean cookbook. They all have incredible, healthy meals which will revitalize your love for cooking and introduce you to a range of different foods and macro combos.
For me, 2016 was definitely the year of trying new things and it did me a world of good. I learned so much about which types of workouts suit my body best and which types of foods and macro combinations best affect my body. It’s your turn to challenge yourself and to try new things.
The keyword here is definitely to challenge yourself. Without no challenge, there is no struggle, and you won’t learn nor get fit without a bit of difficulty. That’s just the hard truth–nothing good in life comes easy and you will need to work your ass off to get where you want to be–in life, fitness and anything else.
Honestly yours,
Alice
