I have been feeling very proud of myself lately. For the past 2 weeks, I have been waking up at 6am on weekdays, at least twice a week, and going to the gym to workout. I recently started a full-time job which means that the only time I can workout is before 8:30am or after 5pm. Since the gym is PACKED in the late afternoons and evenings, this really only left the mornings as a viable option.
Realizing that your excuses are worthless
Let me just clarify; I am not saying that excuses aren’t valid, I am just saying that there is no point making excuse after excuse to avoid something that is hard (but not impossible) to do. At first, I really resisted the idea of waking up at 6am to workout. I haven’t had to wake up regularly at 6am in years! The first day of forcing myself to just get up and go was seriously hard. It is not easy to wake up that early, but you know what? Sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. And you can make things easier for yourself as well. I will put my gym clothes out the night before and make sure all my meals for the previous day are ready, so that all I need to concentrate on in the mornings is to get to the gym, workout, come home, shower and go to work.
It will become a routine – promise!
I would say, it took a week to become a routine. After the first few brutal 6am wake ups, my body has gotten used to the fact that it will abruptly be awakened by a ringing alarm and that I need to quickly change and get myself out the door. I almost look forward to it now … almost! The feeling of accomplishment after I finish definitely keeps me motivated. Plus, I have found that it is much easier to turn down sweet treats. It is all too painful to think about ruining your progress after waking up diligently at 6am to workout!
Try doing a morning workout this week
My challenge to you is to try and wake up early and do a workout this week. Put your workout clothes out the night before, prep some breakfast (try this easy bircher muesli) and set the alarm for whatever works for you. I would suggest doing some light cardio for your first morning workout, as it is a bit of a shock to your body to be so active when you are normally asleep at that time! I alternate being doing Kayla Itsines bikini body guide workouts (<– affiliate link) and cardio for my morning workouts.
Let me know how you feel afterwards – I will be surprised if anyone regrets it. Good luck to you all; you can do it!
Honestly yours,
Alice

I’m trying this next week. I started a new job so have to get up at 5am (!!) to fit my exercise In. Thanks for the tips 🙂
Good luck, Kate, you can do it!! Just bear in mind you will totally try and talk yourself out of it – just go and don’t even listen to yourself. If this helps, I have a friend with 2 kids who wakes up at 5:30am to workout.
Let me know how it goes,

I did it this morning and I feel so good that I might even go back later on today!!!! Great way to start my day! Thanks for the motivation!

Excuses are useless when you finally find a way!
I struggle with the mornings… I have managed to get up a few mornings lately but this morning despite my best efforts sleep won. I had my clothes laid out, my lunch all made and good to go, but it was just too cold. Now I’m full of regret 🙁
BUT tomorrow is a new day and I’m going to try again. Thanks for the motivation!
Ohh, Dee, I had a morning just like that too about 2 weeks ago! I woke up one day but decided to go back to sleep despite having laid out my workout clothes before and all my meals prepped. Felt horrible after and have the feeling of regret has made sure I have not skipped a session since.
I hope you were able to make it to the gym early this time! You can do it, and so happy I can offer any motivation at all.
